Outside of your awesome presentation, you capture the essence of social media by sharing so many wonderful writers' works.

Just one question: Why did you put your twitter handle above your friendfeed URL? Hah... Nag, nag, nag... I know ;-)

Seriously, this is perhaps one of the best representations of what this is about!

Re: I joined Friendfeed, now what?

A fine chap? TwiTip had their Top Ten Twitter user lists and I was fairly new to FF and wanted to know who those I admired would recommend there. Thanks for starting the room at http://friendfeed.com/friendfeedfollow to collect all the recommendations in one place. Why didn't I think of that? I created FF rooms for other ideas.

Re: I joined Friendfeed, now what?

@Growmap I really like your Friendfeed Challenge post. This is a great way to encourage recommendations from the Friendfeed community. I'll be submitting my own list soon. (I've got to make it through this week of Friendfeed posts first :)

I also appreciate you collecting Louis Gray's "10 People" posts. Perhaps we should create a Friendfeed Follow Recommendations room to encourage others to contribute to a central repository. We could solve the problem instead of waiting on Friendfeed.

Re: I joined Friendfeed, now what?

Some may be interested in my FriendFeed Challenge post as it contains recommended Top Ten lists from active FF users. I'll be posting my major presentation tomorrow afternoon and then there will be follow up posts covering Lists, Stream Management, and Groups.

I was given the opportunity to speak about Friendfeed to a peer group and decided to take this opportunity to write my "Essential Guide to Twitter"

I really appreciate you taking the time to read and for commenting. BTW, the December post has an outdated link to your Friendfeed Profile.

For everyone else check out Louis's Dec 10 people to follow here (http://www.louisgray.com/live/2008/12/10-people...) and follow Michael on Friendfeed here http://friendfeed.com/mikeroblogger

Re: I joined Friendfeed, now what?

@lukejsmith I completely agree that social media takes a lot of work but I've found it very useful and rewarding. I'm hoping that I can help others learn the lessons that we all learned the long way.

I also think your point about broadcasting goes to the heart of managing social networks. The goal is increasing your Signal-to-Noise ratio and that is one of the reasons I find Friendfeed so valuable. Thanks for taking the time to read and for leaving a comment. I really appreciate it.

Re: I joined Friendfeed, now what?

Great advice! I'm going to bookmark this so I can share it with anyone looking for advice on how to get started on friendfeed. I’m biased, but December is a particularly good ten people to follow list from Louis! Lately i have found that people only are using social media to distribute there one way conversation. So Social Media is very powerful but too hard to maintain to make it sustainable - eventually people will see it's just a lot of people broadcasting poor quality content that is not unique from one social network to the next. Thanks for writing this post I have not made the effort to find unique FF people to follow in a long time. Then you can just type in keyword <space> term in the address bar just like your method and not even touch the search bar. I assigned "G" for Google, "Y" for Yahoo and so on.

For FireFox 2.X I think you have to install another add-on that will let you assign keywords to search engines. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/...

MarkRH

Re: Firefox Extension Recommendation: Stylish

I've never had any problems with it. I use keywords frequently and this is a must have browser customization.

If you are interested in more Stylish tweaks check out this post on the Stylish Add-on http://bit.ly/rVDsr

Re: 3 great Firefox tweaks for Twitter

Thank you, I like the addon but adding them to the search bar means I have to change my focus to the search bar and then hit the drop down box. I can change focus to the search bar w/ Ctrl+K but I don't think you can select the desired search engine with a keystroke.

By using custom quick search bookmarks I never have to use the mouse. Ctrl+L to get to location/address bar and then I just type in my keyword and search. If I can prevent moving my hands to the mouse then it speeds up the process. Good find though.

Re: 3 great Firefox tweaks for Twitter

Thanks for the first tip, that's a good one.

You might check out https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/... to add any website's search box to FireFox's search bar and then assign a key to it. All my drivers were found! GEForce 8500GT video, onboard chipsets, sounds, etc. The speed is impressive on a Quad Core Q8200. Love the sticky notes and all the gadgets. Not one hiccup yet. Oh well, yeah, one problem. There are no drivers for my old Epson printer available, so that is a big boo. But other than that, even the music files sound crisper and deeper! The
target focus group may shift from the world at large to family and friends
but it all hinges on the ability to process and publish updates. It is this
similarity that leads to my hypothesis that the more methods of updating you
allow and the more 3rd party sites plug into your service the more pervasive
your service will be.

I also don't necessarily agree with your assumption on Myspace. It was still
a controlled community b/c the user had to approve every single person into
their space. I think Myspace's demise is more related to the geocities
effect where you end up with awful user pages that no one wants to see.

I'm not so much comparing Twitter to Facebook but rather examining how they
are different in their approach to third parties and how I think that will
affect their logevity.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read and to comment. Thank you

Re: Why Twitter will Outlast Facebook.

Facebook can be improved, yes, but remember, these are two different tools for two different purposes. Twitter is for very public communication, Facebook is purposefully more intimate. The reason people fled from myspace is because there was no privacy. Facebook provides an intimate collection of friends that spammers and strangers are not allowed into. That is a desireable feature for this product. The public nature of Twitter, likewise, is a desireable feature for that product. I agree that improvements can be made, but if Facebook loses its ability to keep strangers and spammers away, it loses the very thing that makes it what it is.

Re: Hard Drive Recovery made easy with TestDisk

Yes I am agree that TestDisk has features for both novices and experts.
